![]() In Western Europe this new age of discovery was ushered in by a symbolic and overwhelming event. The Latin West came into ever closer contact with the cultures of Asia and, in particular, with the Christian East, and this brought about a radical change in attitudes. ![]() This newly ‘explored’ world was far more to the west than the Mediterranean. And, by the beginning of the 13th Century, Europe was experiencing the earliest phase of the so called ‘Age of Discovery’ – a period of great travel, exploration and new contact with the Far East, in particular, and the Orient generally.īy 1500, the peoples of Western Europe had become aware of the time scale of the historical processes taking place in the Far East and in the Orient, and of the fact that this involved and, in fact, required a substantial change in their own culture, their own mental outlook. Around 1200, however, the feudal order began to disintegrate, and the peoples and cities of Europe became more inter-connected. The result was an age of great kings, prelates and noblemen, of great cities and of a world-wide trading system, the basis for the economic prosperity of Europe to come.ĭuring the early period of the Middle Ages Europe was divided into a number of self-contained societies, each with its own political and economic development.
